Why Mulled Wine Is Good For You

Its Day 4 on the Advent Calendar!! And yes, I know what you are thinking... I have gone mad with all the excitement for Christmas. But the truth is - homemade mulled wine actually has lots of healthy properties, when drank in moderation of course!!

Here are our top 5:

1. Cinnamon is an anti inflammatory

Not only does cinnamon smell and taste like christmas, giving mulled wine that distinctive flavour. It also reduces swelling and helps your body to restore normal functioning.

Day to Day: Sprinkle some in your tea, coffee or on your breakfasts! If you're feeling adventurous - try it on sweet potato! Yum!

2. Lowers Cholesterol and risks of heart disease

A high quality, organic red wine is full of antioxidants. Antioxidants help to increase good cholesterol (HDL) and reduce the bad stuff (LDL), which in turn reduces heart disease and clogged arteries. Also linking to cancer and dementia prevention. I think i need a glass now!

Day to Day: A small glass of good quality red a night has links to health benefits, but remember its not a one fits all approach! Listen to your body.

3. Nutmeg is a detox king

Perfect, what better than to counteract the christmas boozing with the king of spices. Nutmeg has shown to help cleanse the liver and kidneys acting as a tonic, this starts to eliminate the build up of toxins stored in them. Boosting your body overall!

Day to Day: Use nutmeg oil on your skin to make it look radient, or try grating some into soups and sauces!

4. Helps boost the immune system

Cloves have many amazing properties, they help improve the immune system by boosting white blood cell count. This comes from the compounds contained in the dried flower bud of the clove.

Day to Day: Quick cure for a headache! Combine a couple of cloves and rock salt into a past (you could use a pestle and mortar), mix into some milk and drink. This will quickly relieve the pain.

5. Indigestion improvements

The rich dietary fibre in orange peel helps regulate bowel movements, which soothes the digestive system. Making you feel fantastic!

Day to Day: Use orange peel as a natural chewing gum to reduce bad breath, or even better to whiten your teeth without the chemicals! Mush it up and apply it as a paste, and there you have it! Money saver too!

Well it wouldn't be right if we didn't give you our Eat Clean Cuisine spin on this! So here we go, share with your friends and most importantly enjoy!

  • 2 tsp of ground cinnamon / 2 large cinnamon stick
  • 1 tbsp grated nutmeg
  • 6 whole cloves
  • 4 tbsp maple syrup
  • 4 thick slices of orange
  • Peel of 2 oranges
  • Peel of 1 lemon
  • 2 bottles of organic red wine
  • 4 star anise

  1. Put all ingredients, except the red wine and star anise, into a saucepan with a cup of water.
  2. Let the mixture come to the boil and simmer slowly for 5-8 minutes, allowing the water to evaporate.
  3. Add the wine and the star anise, reduce the heat and let it all warm through for 5 minutes.
  4. Strain if you prefer, and put into festive mugs and glasses!
  5. Enjoy!
